Adopt A Greyhound Program

Greyhounds - The perfect pet

Greyhound Adoption is dedicated to finding homes for greyhounds that are no longer suitable for racing. While many greyhounds become available for adoption each year, misconceptions about these dogs deter people from owning them as pets. Due to the fact that they are of the sight hound family and aroused by the passion of chase, people mistakenly make the assumption that greyhounds are aggressive. In reality greyhounds are quiet, well mannered, and very easy to live with. They are friendly, affectionate, lazy, calm, clean, loving, trusting and good-natured.

Pet Wares Plus is proud to own an adopted greyhound! Phoebe was 6 years when she was adopted in Feb 2007. She is a total sweetheart and became a part of the family straight away. Her favorite time of the day is a quick 3 minute run, after which, a 3 hour sleep is required!

She is so low maintenance and easy going. She loves asparagus, brussel sprouts, eggs, cheese and a roo tail for a treat on Sundays. Phoebe was classified as not "cat friendly" but with a little socialisation, she happily lived with our 20 year old cat. She loves people and wags her tail madly whenever she sees anyone who might want to give her a pat.

Pet Wares Plus adopts a second greyhound, Bundy - March 2008!
Bundy was 8 years old in Oct 2011. She last raced in Feb 2006 but thinks that her life as a pet is pretty cool. She loves having her belly rubbed 24/7. Her favorite part of the day is going for walkies with Phoebe and Sally. She also loves having her head out of the car window for a quick "power sniff".

Pet Wares Plus welcomes Sally - May 2011!
Sally was 2 years old in Mar 2011 and adopted in May 2011 from the Greyhound Safety Net. She last raced in Feb 2011 but thinks that her life as a pet is an excellent excuse to play whenever the opportunity presents. She loves giving Bundy the paw - "hey, let's play". Bundy has happily taught Sally how to squeak fluffy toys which she loves to run after and retrieve! Sally is a morning girl, ready to go as soon as her eyes open then, at night, fast asleep like a puppy. She loves her walkies with Phoebe and Bundy and watching TV. She also loves having her head buried under a pillow - any pillow, any time!

Greyhound Adoption needs more adoptions urgently!

The Greyhound Adoption Program is an initiative of Greyhound Racing Victoria dedicated to finding homes for greyhounds that are no longer suitable for racing. Greyhounds that have passed through the program and have been awarded a special green GAP collar, do not have to be muzzled in public. Please check with the adoption program in your state, for the latest legislation regarding muzzling.

The Greyhound Safety Net Inc. is an independent, non-profit organisation, incorporated with Consumer Affairs Victoria. GSN was founded by a group of dedicated people who love Greyhounds and were moved to give to these beautiful companion animals a life after racing. Their endeavour is to provide a Safety Net for Greyhounds who may not otherwise be saved. GSN are all volunteers that raise funds through market stalls, sponsorship, and on-line sales of Greyhound items, such as calendars and cards. These funds help cover veterinary costs, microchipping and foster care of the dogs in a home environment until a permanent home is found. Greyhound Safety Net encourages and promotes Greyhound welfare wherever Greyhounds need a helping hand.
